The 24 in 48 Readathon is hosted by Rachel over on tumblr. This is a relaxed readathon where participants can choose how to schedule their marathon time over the course of the weekend.
I'll be updating my progress mostly on twitter @worldforthereading, come chat!
The overly ambitious reading pile:
Introductory questionnaire:
1.
What part of the world are
you reading from this weekend?
New
York.
2.
What book are you most
looking forward to reading?
Station
Eleven! I’m reading it first. It seems to be the most beloved book of the year,
so I have to manage my expectations. Also I'm very excited to read Lives in Ruins.
3.
Are you planning on
reading from someplace besides your house or apartment this weekend?
I’m
probably sticking close to home, but if I go for a run I’ll listen to an
audiobook. I need to finish up Liar Temptress, Soldier, Spy. It’s a great book
I tend to get audiobook fatigue and take ages to finish.
4.
Tell us something about
yourself!
One
of my favorite things besides reading is listening to podcasts (distracting me
from finishing my audiobooks). I have a long bus commute and don’t usually read
during this time due to motion sickness. Some favorites include NPR Pop Culture
Happy Hour, all the Bookriot podcasts, Books on the Nightstand, How Did This
Get Made, and Welcome to Nightvale. Oh, and Serial, lately. Recs for more are
always welcome :)
If you’ve
done this readathon before, do you have any tips for other readers? If you haven’t,
is there anything you’re nervous about?
I
haven’t done this readathon before, but I have done Dewey’s 24 hour readathon.
My advice is to take breaks and move around a bit to prevent stiffness, have
plenty of snacks and drinks on hand, and stick to shorter books, at least for
the end of the readathon. Also I like to clean my house beforehand so I’m not
distracted by clutter or laundry, etc
Anthony Trollope said,
“What on earth could be more luxurious than a sofa, a book, and a cup of
coffee?…Was ever anything so civil?
And C.S. Lewis said, “You
can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit
me.”
(It's a mystery why I have so many Christmas mugs. It's like they're breeding in the cabinet)
#Team Trollope
From Lives in Ruins by Marilyn Johnson
(Marilyn does not want to hear complaints about the lack of dinosaurs)
Guess the Cover Challenge
1. The Vacationers
2. Life After Life
3. The Bees
4. The Good Lord Bird
5. All the Light We Cannot See
Day 2: 5 Hours to Go
Total Books Read: 3
- Station Eleven (Excellent)
- Vivian Apple at the End of the World (Ok, I like the premise more than the execution)
- On Immunity: An Inoculation (Fascinating)
- Two hours of the Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy audiobook (still good)
I'll probably get started with Lives in Ruins until 9PM then call it a night. My recent addiction to The Walking Dead must be satisfied.
A couple more challenges:
Spine Poetry!
Lost for Words,
I'll Give You the Sun
The Infinite Sea
Land of Love and Drowning
Spell Your Name
J - J: A Novel by Howard Jacobson
A- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
I- I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum
M- Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers
E- Euphoria by Lily King

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon is taking place October 18 and I'm happy to be able to participate. Here's a stack of books I'll be choosing from:
I've been in a bit of a slump lately, hopefully this will shake me out of it.
Anyone participating in this read-a-thon? What books will you be reading?
Update #1: Hour 8: Finished Authority and am halfway through Acceptance, the Southern Reach books were a great choice for the read-a-thon. Took a break for a run at hour 4 and listened to Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy on audio.

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? Finishing Acceptance by Jeff Vandermeer
2. How many books have you read so far?
Just one, soon to be two.
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the
second half of the Read-a-thon?
I'll probably pick up Holly Black's The Darkest Part of the Forest, I've been looking forward to reading for a while.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with
those? A few, mostly phone calls and laundry that won't fold itself, etc. It's good to rest my eyes a little. Also I spent a surprising amount of time on twitter.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I'm surprised how relaxed I've been about meeting reading goals this year. Though, I am going to try to read into the night, I have a stock of tea to help me maybe finish one more book.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is
organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It
is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs
through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is
low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual
number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand
prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books
11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From
the Bout of Books team
Reading Pile:
The Jewel (The Lone City #1) by Amy Ewing
Lockwood & Co: The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud
Mary: The Summoning (Bloody Mary #1) by Hillary Monahan
The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero
Hopefully I'll finish at least two of these books and participate in a couple of challenges as well.
To all Bout of Books participants, happy reading!
Update 8/23/14
- # of books completed: 2
- # of pages read: 1,034
- Books read: The Whispering Skull (Lockwood & Co. #2) by Jonathan Stroud, The Jewel by Amy Ewing
- 252 pages into The Secret Place by Tana French
The Spell It Out Challenge hosted by Kimberlyfaye Reads:
J - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
A - Across a Star Swept Sea by Diana Peterfreund
I - In the Shadows by Kiersten White & Jim Di Bartolo
M - Mistwalker by Saundra Mitchell
E - Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History Making Race Around the World by Matthew Goodman
Bout of Books: The Conclusion
- # of Books Completed: 4
- # of Pages Read: 1,678
- Books Read: The Jewel (The Lone City #1) by Amy Ewing, The Whispering Skull (Lockwood & Co #2) by Jonathan Stroud, The Secret Place by Tana French, and Amity by Micol Ostow.
All in all I completed many books I was meaning to read (though I deviated from my pile) and had great read-a-thon.

Hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, this Read-a-thon is from October 3-8 and focuses on scary or paranormal books. My goal is to complete 4 books, here's what I'll be reading:
Delia's Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer
Vicious by Victoria Schwab
Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween by Lisa Morton
The Waking Dark By Robin Wasserman
I'm about halfway through the first two books, I've been jumping between the books because lately I have a goldfish attention span.
Trick or Treat is fascinating, apparently a lot of what is common knowledge about Halloween is based on mistranslations. For example "Samhain" was a New Year's festival, and not a Celtic god or "lord of the dead".
I'm hoping to participate in at least one challenge, and will definitely be visiting blogs to cheer people on :).
Update & Wrap-up:
I visited a couple of blogs but not as many as I hoped, and participated in a couple of the challenges. Reading goal-wise I finished Vicious and read a large chunk of The Waking Dark but I'm still only halfway through Delia's Shadow and a quarter into Trick or Treat.
What really put me off track was during a recent bout of insomnia I picked up The Monstrumologist and did a re-read, following it with its The Curse of the Wendigo the next day which I also completed. Around 3 1/2 books read overall, not bad.
