Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

This week: Top Ten Books I want to read but don't own:

And two books that haven't been released yet:
Tuesday, August 12, 2014
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the ladies over at The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books I'm not sure I want to read (for various reasons):

1. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson - This is a case of hype making me leery of an inevitable disappointment. I've been looking forward to this book for a long time, but some reviews I've seen recently from trusted sources have burst that bubble. I probably will still read it, just not any time soon.
2. California by Edan Lepucki - Another recommended book with lots of hype, I thought the premise sounded great but many reviews claim it's very slow. I'll probably give it a try, but I'm not in a rush.
3. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling - This is the kind of literary fiction I personally find unbearable, so as much as I love Rowling it'll never reach the top of the TBR pile.
4. The Road by Cormac McCarthy - I started this but did not finish before it had to be returned to the library, I know enough about the ending that I don't feel the need to read the rest.

5. The Scorch Trials by James Dashner - I didn't like The Maze Runner on a writing level but I am interested in the film. Maybe I'll give it another try.
6. The Selection by Kiera Cass - I feel I missed the window on trying this series before I felt dystopian burnout.
7. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - The writing style seems like it would get on my nerves pretty quickly, though many people seem to love this series and some things I've heard about it are intriguing. It's a maybe.
8. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - I bought the e-book based on a  deal but I'm ambivalent about reading it. *shrugs*

9. Spell Bound By Rachel Hawkins - I really like this series and I'm just procrastinating on reading the conclusion.
10. Snuff by Terry Pratchett - This may very well be the last book Pratchett writes starring Commander Vimes of the City Watch, one of my very favorite characters, and I'm saving it for later (perpetually).

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by the Broke and the Bookish

This week's list: Top Ten Characters I'd want with me on a deserted island.

1. Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games trilogy. She can hunt, and has fantastic survival skills.

2. Finnick Odair also from The Hunger Games. As portrayed by Sam Claflin

3. Skink from various books by Carl Hiassan, particularly Skink: No Surrender.  This eccentric old man has plenty of survival skills and probably some pretty good stories as well.

4. Hassan from An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. I just find him hilarious.

5. Howl and

6. Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle my favorite couple from one of my favorite books.

7. Hermione from Harry Potter, magic would certainly be useful in this situation. Hopefully she'd bring the bottomless bag from Deathly Hallows.

8. Sturmhond from Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy. My favorite non-murderous guy from that trilogy. Also has a useful knowledge of boats.

9. Mogget from the Abhorsen trilogy. A demonic yet adorable cat, because why not.

10. Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files. A nerdy wizard with a quick wit sounds like good company on this island.

This week I'm waiting on…
Snow Like Ashes
By Sara Raasch
Publisher: Balzer & Bray
Release Date: October 14, 2014

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

This fantasy looks right in my wheelhouse. I love the cover design.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's topic is… Top Ten TV Shows/Movies.

I went in knowing that I can never narrow it down to only ten movies, then said to myself, "Well, I don't watch much TV." After filling two post-it notes with contenders for this list, I realized:
I don't watch TV consistently, there are only certain shows I love.
Ok so I'm a TV addict. Anyway, here are my favorite comedy shows, first in my heart, right before murder mysteries and any show by Bryan Fuller:

1. Beloved, most quotable show of my heart. I own all the seasons on DVD and relate to Liz Lemon to what is probably an unflattering degree.

2. This is a fairly new show with only one season, but it's one that had me laughing out loud with its rather crude humor and awesome central friendship. Also, comedian Hannibal Buress who has some of the best lines:

3. A show that always cheers me up, with some of the best characters ever.

4. Another laugh out loud funny show, everyone is this cast is amazing, yet my favorite has to be Stephanie Beatriz as Detective Rosa Diaz.  My hero:

5. Every character on this show is a terrible asshole, but the dialogue is so sharp and clever and I love it.

6. This one tends to be uneven due to various production issues/change of creator/etc. but when it's good it's really good.

7. A little older than some of my other choices, but I will always love Scrubs.

8. A classic.

Bonus: Two Old Favorites

9. I started watching this show when it first aired in 1997 and I was in middle school, and it meant a lot to me. Watching the DVDs after it ended even helped me bond with my college friends. Legit criticisms can be made of it I'm sure, but I am not really interested in them. Sorry.

10. Another show I loved growing up, as I was the same age as Rory while it aired. Also a very quotable show.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This week…confessions!

Oh! Bookish confessions. Here they are:
  1.  I… own a Kindle. It was a gift! I know from the many articles about Amazon vs. Hatchette that this is a sign of my moral decay or something, but sometimes I like getting an e-book on my TBR for $2.99. I also get books, new and used, from a variety of sources including my library and independent bookstores, so I don’t feel all that bad.
  2.  I have a very hard time writing reviews for books I liked but didn’t absolutely love. The hardest reviews are for those 3-4 star books that are entertaining and don’t have specific flaws, but I just didn’t feel that spark. Finding something interesting to say feels like pulling out my own teeth.
  3.   I’m really bad at remembering character names, especially in YA novels. I’ll remember plot details, my general impression, even specific lines. It’s names that escape me. I don’t know why this is.
  4. I love reading other people’s blogs and need to be better at commenting consistently.
  5. The blogging community seems very focused on new releases, due to ARCS, promotion, etc, and it does influence my own reading. I don’t read many backlist titles anymore, there’s so many exciting things coming out!
  6.   Related, I own too many unread books. I should set up a system and read the older books on my shelves before obtaining any new ones.
  7. I’m very much a mood reader, which is why I don’t request many e-galleys or sign up for tours. I do have a spreadsheet of TBR titles/read books to review that I draw from, but I’m afraid too much pressure will take the fun out of it all.
  8. I’ve been reading this book, My Beloved Brontosaurus: On the Road with Old Bones, New Science, and Our Favorite Dinosaurs, almost every night for a month at the rate of a couple of pages per night. I love it but it’s acting like a sleep aid.
  9. I wish I was better at listening to audiobooks as I’d consume more stories that way. However I’ve found I’m extremely particular. Narrative non-fiction works the best, or non-stylized first person fiction. For example I loved The Martian but found the We Were Liars audiobook unbearable.
  10. I need to get better at balancing blog/reading time. Working on the blog takes time I would spend reading, and vice versa. Basically I need to schedule more posts ahead of time to achieve this balance.

That's it for me! What are some of your confessions?

This week I'm waiting on…
The Jewel (The Lone City #1)
By Amy Ewing
Published by HarperTeen
Release Date: September 2, 2014

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence... and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

This could be really excellent and interesting, though I've been fooled by pretty covers before. Sounds like an awesome romance with a dystopian setting.

Top Ten Tueday: Top Ten Book Cover Trends

One trend that's very common is "girl in a dress", it's everywhere and it's getting kind of old, but there are still some gorgeous covers:

I also love the trend that keeps it simple by focusing on the title:
